New publication: Incentives for students


The Journal of Business Economics has published an article on the effect of certificates and deadlines on student performance by Andreas Ostermaier. The author exploits a quasi-experimental setting in the aftermath of the European Bologna reform to show that certificates awarded to students early in their program improve academic performance. Deadlines to pass early courses prevent them strategically failing and resitting exams. These findings hold implications for educators and policy makers who design degree programs.
